Under the glittering lights and a sea of flash bulbs, 10 fresh-faced graduates of the Academy of Art University School of Fashion participated in their 21st runway showcase. Held at the trendy Skylight Clarkson Square on September 9, 2017, these recent BFA and MFA graduates showcased the latest in womenswear and menswear collections.
Founded in 1929 by Richard S. Stephens, Art Director for Sunset Magazine, the Academy of Art University is full of rich history. With the goal of preparing aspiring professionals in the fields of design, communication and the arts,.Academy of Art University maintains vigorous admission standards, admitting only the best of the best. These high standards are showcased in the work of their graduates.
The audience’s excitement was palpable. The incredible designs, high-quality craftsmanship, and innovative masterpieces wowed those in attendance, including, Sara Kozlowski, Director of Education and Professional Development at CFDA , as well as the acclaimed Ms.. J Alexander from television’s America’s Next Top Model.
The Academy of Art University has no shortage of esteemed and celebrity Alumni – including actress-turned-designer Lauren Conrad, reality star Heidi Montag, and Deanne Fitzmaurice, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Deanne Fitzmaurice. It’s safe to say, the graduates showcased most certainly will leave their mark on the industry as well.
After all of the grueling work spent bringing their vision to fruition, the recent graduates of the Academy of Art University put on a show for the ages. In front of their peers, colleagues, mentors and friends, they presented their vision of the future of fashion. And boy, they did not disappoint.
Some highlights of the show included:
Carlos Rodriguez – born in Mexico City, Mexico, and raised in Clarksburg, California, the BFA Fashion Design graduate created a contemporary embroidered masterpiece, utilizing both hand and machine embroidery.
Saya Shen – hailing from Beijing, China, the MFA graduate brought her landscape-inspired oversized silhouette to life, utilizing digital prints of nature transferred directly on the fabric.
Joanna Jadallah – born in Chicago, and railed in Orange County California, MFA Menswear Design graduate drew inspiration from her ancestor’s struggles in leaving their native Pakistan. Using delicate cashmere knits, lambskin leather and lightweight wool, Jadallah’s collection captured her story and beautifully showcased it in her work.
The Academy of Art University is recognized for graduating professionally ready talent. This could not be more apparent than at this show. The exquisite designs showcased in the new graduate’s designs, proved that graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to create fashion-forward and industry rocking designs.
