Mina Ebrahimi and her American dream

There are plenty of examples of people who come to the United States in the hope of an American dream. While some of them get very successful, others do quite decent in their lives. It all depends on the kind of hard work and passion you show for your dream to turn it into a reality. Same was the case with Mina Ebrahimi, the founder, and CEO of Saint Germain Catering. She was born to immigrant parents who came to America in 1978 to have a better life for their family. As rightly said, if you are passionate about something, you need to go all out in the land of opportunities and sky would be the limit for your success.

Mina also followed her passion for cooking that she developed at an early age and converted that into a full-time catering business. While she worked at an early age at her parents’ bakery in Virginia, she developed a keen knack of understanding what customers wanted and took it all along the way to shape it into a real-time catering business. Today she employs 32 full-time employees and 8 part-time employees and she strongly believes it is just the beginning. Her business model primarily caters to corporate events, but she also serves her clients at personal events. Whether it is a luncheon, a private party or a grand wedding, she got you covered on all of that.

Because of her mission and vision, she has been conferred with a lot of accolades to her name. Some of them include 2014 Enterprising Women of the Year Award, Winner of SmartCEO’s Brava Awards and Washington Business Journal’s 2010 Top 40 Under 40 Award to name a few. She is a perfect example of a female mentor who believes in the concept of giving back to the community. She is also very philanthropic and has been an advocate of so many non-profit organizations who is working tirelessly to improve the standard of living of the military families. She has also made significant contributions to research in the cancer area that could be beneficial to many people.

DR SAAD SAAD

DR SAAD SAAD

Dr. Saad Saad who is a highly innovative pediatric surgeon is recently retired having served for 47 years. Migrating to the United States in 1980 after serving in Saudi Arabia for years helping patients who needed complex surgical procedures but lacked financial support, he became the only qualified pediatric surgeon in the entire U.S that was proficient in English and Arabic during that time.

Dr. Saad Saad has always been on the forefront of helping his pat  ients recover faster and experience minimal or no pain at all during his medical procedures and that is the reason he has been developing new processes and methods to improve his care. The doctor in under this objective has developed several medical systems like in one instance he removed the second incision from a young boy’s body through a technique that was able to be applied and used successfully on other patients. He has also patented two inventions that have helped improve surgical procedures, and these are;

  1. The development of a catheter. A catheter is a tube that is inserted into the body during surgery to help drain fluids and gases. The machine is used for other procedures with the most known one being to help remove urine during an operation.

Initially when doctors needed to use the tool they had to locate its specific position by doing an X-ray or a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) the two procedures posed a threat of causing radiation effects to the patient after continued exposure. As such Dr. Saad invented a Catheter with Integral Electromagnetic Location Identification Device that acts as a metal detector to locate the catheter location. He has fixed the catheter tip with a loop that has wires inside it and a magnetically porous material that allows a doctor to use an external locating device that sends signals to the magnetic coil tip to locate its position.

This invention has been proved to be very supportive since it is small and portable and has come in handy especially during emergency situations when doctors do not have time to perform a full body scan, it has also mitigated the use of guide wires in placing of the catheters inside a patient body.

  1. The Image suction and Irrigation endoscope. An endoscope is a device that doctors use to look inside the patient’s body without necessarily doing surgery or scan. This pipe which is attached to an optical camera has had challenges during use because in some instances the fluids or fog inside the bodies covers the lens. Dr. Saad Saad has come up with a witty invention that has the endoscope attached to suction to suck up fluids and at the same time irrigator to clear the view. How Sightsavers is Tackling Eye Disease

Glaucoma is a terrifying eye disease that occurs when fluid buildup causes damage to the optic nerve. Damage from this pressure causes deterioration of peripheral vision that some say is so gradual that you don’t notice until it’s too late. This disease is common in people over 60, but a lot of young people have been noted to develop glaucoma.

I am 27 years old and for years I have been closely monitored for glaucoma. It is rare for someone my age, but it can happen to anyone.

In the UK, a woman was experiencing eye pain and cloudiness in one of her eyes, with her other eye soon to follow. Her eye pressure had skyrocketed in less than 24 hours from a normal level to 81 mm Hg. She was hours away from losing her vision from acute glaucoma. Once her symptoms got worse she was rushed to the hospital and two clinical staff worked overtime to save her vision on the free National Health Service.

The woman was educated by her daughter about her condition with material from Sightsavers. Sightsavers is a foundation that prevents blindness in impoverished parts of the world!

For developing countries such as Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, or Bangladesh, this story would have been far more tragic.

People all over the world lose their vision for ailments easier to treat than glaucoma, such as cataracts. Cataracts cause a third of worldwide blindness and affect nearly 13 million people today. People living in developing countries are at a higher risk. This is why more people need to be aware of Sightsavers.

Eye health care services simply aren’t available in a lot of countries. Sightsavers works to build a base of eye health services that are accessible to everyone and affordable by everyone, no matter where in the world they were born.

Sightsavers also works hard to promote the rights of people who have disabilities.

Sightsavers is an amazing and extraordinarily caring organization that everybody needs to know about. Could you imagine never being able to see your child again? I could never imagine losing my vision, and I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy.

New Tariff to Boost Fairer US-China Trade, says Prof. Kamil Idris

When in March US President Trump announced a new, stiffer tariff on imports from China, the Chinese trade community was enraged. The tariff will be imposed on Chinese imports worth $50 billion and is the latest defense move by the US to protect American intellectual property. Professor Kamil Idris, former Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), opines that this is by far the best initiative yet from the US in curbing intellectual property violations, albeit coming a hundred years late.

The US Trade Representative’s report for 2017 indicates that the US lost between $225 million and $600 billion following intellectual property theft by China. Prof. Kamil said the $50 billion tariff represents a loss of US corporate revenue as a result of these intellectual property violations.

China has not only been counterfeiting and pirating American technology; it turns out that American companies are often forced to transfer technology to Chinese companies to access the Chinese market. China additionally sets tough conditions for US and other foreign companies that want to operate in the nation. Most of these companies usually end up giving in to demands for intellectual property control just to have a share of the massive market. Lately, there has also been an increase in China-instigated cyber-attacks and cyber theft in the US, whose intention is gaining access to trade secrets. In passing the tariff, Trump invoked Section 301, which additionally gives him the power to impose trade sanctions.

Prof. Kamil Idris, a celebrated law expert, has over the years served in multiple international bodies that deal with peacekeeping and international cooperation. He was head of WIPO between 1997 and 2008 and was instrumental in pushing the global recognition and celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day, a day that celebrates human creativity as the fuel that drives economic, social, and cultural development. Currently, Prof. Kamil is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, an intergovernmental body that facilitates international dispute resolution.

Dr. Saad Saad in the Middle East

Dr. Saad Saad is a retired pediatric surgeon living in New Jersey. Although he is no longer in practice, his influence in the industry is still huge and one of the most important in the medical industry. In his years of practice, he left tangible evidence that indeed he was there. His prowess as a doctor came out through the innovation he made and the complex surgeries that he successfully conducted.

In the 1980s, Dr. Saad was already a significant figure in the medical industry, not just in the United States, but around the world. He was working for the Saudi Royal as a personal pediatric surgeon. It is rare for a doctor to land a position in the Royal family, but for Saad, this came to pass. The Saud Royal hire him for two main reasons. One, his professionalism as a doctor huge since he had been certified by the Medical Board in the United States to offer services. Secondly, Dr. Saad was a fluent speaker of English and Arabic. Since he was going to serve in Riyadh, an area predominantly Arabic, his understanding of the language was an added advantage.

After he got the job offer, he moved with his family to Riyadh and ended up serving for almost five years, although he initially anticipated serving for just one year. His stay in the Middle East was one of the productive times in his career. The fact that the Royals had hired him as a private surgeon added so much clout to his career.

How did Dr. Saad Saad become a surgeon? To understand this, we need to look at his origin. He was born in Palestine and raised up in Kuwait. He comes from a family of 8 children who have also excelled very well in different careers. Dr. Saad studied at the Cairo University where he graduated with his medical degree. He received his degree 47 years ago. He worked as an intern in the United Kingdom for a short time before moving to the United States where he settled and started growing his career. In the United States, he worked very hard to attain the board certification as a pediatric surgeon. Board certification in the U.S does not come easy. He had to go through rigorous tests before he could finally get the approval.

In the Middle East, he served at the King Faisal Hospital, which is a facility for the royal families from the Middle East, although they do offer services to the poor people with complex medical problems. He was in charge of all simple and complex surgeries in children and young adults in the facility. His advice was taken seriously by the management. He was the one to give directions on whether a patient was to be taken abroad for further treatment or not Learn more: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saad-saad-524707159/
